Description
Great Britain. The Wyon Hand Stamp. 1860-1912. An actual Wyon Penny wooden block die Hand Stamper for use in Post offices when denoting a bag full of pennies deemed to poor in quality to remain in circulation. The sack or bag would be stamped using this die and candle wax to then be sent back to the treasury for melting and repurposing. A true gem of Postal and Numismatic history complete with an attached piece of paper explaining the item referenced to the National Postal Museum. These items were removed from use in 1912 with the introduction of the automatic coin machines for penny stamps. Pretty much as used, with signs of heavy regular use. Scarce.
Year: 1860-1912
