Description
East Africa, Zanzibar. Bronze Headmans Badge of Office with neck chain for Chake Chake District. 1911-1960. CHAKE CHAKE DISTRICT also written in Arabic text to centre, loop top mount attached with neck chain / ZANZIBAR DEPARTMENT, also in Arabic text at centre. Complete with chain of office for wearing by the awarded headman of the district. 150.00g (total), 57.00mm, 12h. Uncirculated. As issued, the chain showing signs it was worn. A very rare and unusual medal, little can be found about its history. Due to the text also being in English it may suggest British manufacture, and Zanzibar was a British Protectorate until 1960. This medal was from the Northern Island of Pemba and Chake Chake is the largest town there. This award or medal would have been given to a Headman of significance in the district by the Sultanate, unfortunately, most of the clues to the history of this medal are somewhat difficult to pin point. Year: 1911-1960
