We’re thrilled to present a rare and fascinating offering: two Lithuanian AR Long Currency bars, dating from the 12th to 15th century, possibly linked to the Baltic Tribes or Kievan Rus’ territories. These substantial silver ingots — Bar 1 (102.13g) and Bar 2 (70g) — are unmarked and of unknown fineness, making them even more intriguing ⚖️.
Known as Ilgieji or “long money,” these silver rods were semi-circular in shape and served as an early form of currency in the region before the widespread minting of coinage. Most often they measured around 13 cm (5.1 in) in length and weighed between 100–110g (3.5–3.9 oz). Their practicality and silver content made them ideal for high-value trade transactions 🛡️.
The use of these ingots extended across the early Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and similar versions—such as the grivna or grzywna—were used in prominent Eastern trade centres like Kievan Rus’ and Veliky Novgorod. They remained in circulation until the mid-15th century, when formal coinage systems began to take over.
This offering is very scarce, with few such pieces appearing on the open market. Whether you’re a collector of early currency, a student of Baltic history, or simply love unique silver items — this lot is a must-watch 👀.
