Lot 51 – Orbiana, Augusta: A Brief Empress, A Lasting Legacy

πŸ‘‘ Lot 51 – Orbiana, Augusta: A Brief Empress, A Lasting Legacy

May 21, 2025

Ancient Rome. Γ† Sestertius. 225–227 AD. Rome Mint.

This beautiful bronze sestertius features Sallustia Barbia Orbiana, briefly empress and wife of Severus Alexander. Her diademed bust graces the obverse, while Concordia – the goddess of harmony – is shown seated with a patera and double cornucopiae on the reverse.

Despite her short reign, Orbiana’s coins remain highly desirable, especially with such a strong and expressive portrait. This example is well-preserved and exhibits better than Very Fine detail, with light tooling visible in the obverse legend.

πŸ“œ Why it matters
Orbiana was exiled after falling out with her mother-in-law Julia Mamaea, making her coins scarce. This sestertius reflects a turbulent moment in the Severan dynasty β€” and offers collectors a fascinating insight into Roman imperial politics and artistry.
