A Powerful Medallion of Protest and Memory.
⚔️ This medallion was struck in 1901 during the height of the Anglo-Boer War, serving as a deeply symbolic protest against the atrocities committed during the conflict—particularly those inflicted upon Dutch civilians in British-run concentration camps.
🇬🇧 🇿🇦 The Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902) was fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics—the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State—over British influence in the region and control of its rich gold reserves. It was a brutal and controversial conflict, marked by guerrilla warfare, scorched-earth policies, and the internment of civilians in concentration camps. These camps, primarily housing Boer women and children, saw appalling conditions and high mortality rates, drawing international condemnation and leaving deep scars in South African and Dutch cultural memory—powerfully encapsulated in this medallion.
🇳🇱 Featuring dramatic imagery and inscriptions drawn from Dutch history and language, one side shows mounted knights in combat (a reference to the 1568–1648 war against Spain), while the other condemns British actions in South Africa between 1899–1901.
🛡️ “Het is beter te strijden voor het vaderland…”
(“It is better to fight for the fatherland…”)
⚔️ “…dan door een geveinsde vrede te worden bedrogen.”
(“…than to be deceived by a feigned peace.”)
🌍 This piece isn’t just numismatics—it’s a statement, a witness, and a warning.
